Position:  English Language Arts (ELA) Teacher

 

Overview

ASMS offers a research-based, comprehensive middle school program designed to provide an academically challenging and supportive learning environment.  Standards-based instruction and assessment have anchored the experiential learning environment since the school’s inception.  Emphasis is placed on the process of learning, particularly in regard to the development of problem-solving, critical thinking, and organizational skills.  The teaching and learning environment is enhanced by the use of a digital learning platform, enabling teachers to develop and deploy relevant curricular materials and students to demonstrate their learning in real-world contexts. 

 

Position Description

ASMS seeks an experienced, creative, and collaborative middle school English Language Arts (ELA) teacher.  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to teaching ELA, advising, and facilitation/participation in the elective and extracurricular programs of the school.  All aspects of our learning environment are designed to support the development of the whole child.  Candidates must therefore possess a comprehensive understanding of and deep commitment to employing varied instructional strategies to guide all students toward the realization of their potential as learners.

 

Key Responsibilities

Teaching

  • Teach up three sections of ELA, reading, and writing

  • Monitor student progress for mastery of course objectives and differentiate instruction to meet the wide range of student needs

  • Attend weekly team meetings to coordinate curricula and discuss individual student progress

  • Provide standards-based assessments for all students which evaluate the proficiency level achieved for each learning standard being assessed as well as written formal comments on student progress

  • Initiate and maintain communication with parents regularly through phone calls, emails, and face-to-face meetings to inform them of students’ needs and successes

  • Assist with the supervision and oversight of the school spelling bee

 

Advising

  • Meet regularly with individual advisees to support their social-emotional and academic growth

  • Establish and maintain an ongoing relationship with advisees’ parents 

 

Faculty Member

  • Participate in shared faculty responsibilities and duties as assigned by the Heads of School, which include, but are not limited to after-school activities

  • With fellow faculty and staff, chaperone an overnight school trip at least once every two years

 

Required Education and Experience

  • BS or MS degree in English, Literature, ELA education, or ELA-related subject

  • Experience teaching ELA

 

Required Competencies and Skills

  • Passion for teaching and working with middle school students

  • Teaching in a culturally responsive and inclusive manner

  • Comprehensive understanding of middle school ELA curriculum, instruction, and assessment

  • Ability to use student performance data to assess the effectiveness of instructional programs and develop appropriate modifications to improve student performance

  • Desire and ability to work within a team environment

  • Fully embraces a standards-based approach to instruction and assessment with an emphasis on student learning

  • Comfortable using a variety of instructional techniques and practices to meet the learning needs of all students

  • Experience and willingness to use and learn new technology platforms and applications
