Community Service We partner with the local community to identify opportunities where students can develop skills working with local not-for profit organizations to help out here in our community and beyond. All students at ASMS are required to complete 40 hours of community service on an annual basis. Time is provided during the school year for community service projects, but students should also expect that some time outside of school will be required as well.

Community Service During the 2006-2007 school year our community service focus will be partnering with the American Red Cross, the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, the Southeast Steuben County Library, and working with Watson Homestead. Students will have hands on experience working with one of the above organizations.

From the Food Bank of the Southern Tier
October 24, 2005 “We are so grateful to the students of the Alternative School for Math & Science and their families who donated their time on Saturday, October 15th at the Food Bank of the Southern Tier. Thanks to 19 volunteers, your group was able to repack 1500 pounds of nutritious snacks into 402 snack packs and 2700 pounds of assorted food for the Bank’s new Back Pack Program. Your groups total weight of repacked product was 4200 pounds! You should feel proud about logging 57 volunteer hours with our organization in one morning. It truly has made a difference.
Without volunteer groups from organizations like the Alternative School for Math & Science, we could not repack bulk food and ship to our 180 member agencies in six counties in a timely manner. We truly respect your community effort and look forward to developing an even stronger relationship with you in future Food Bank projects.”
“Thank You for contributing to the Food Bank’s success in helping to relieve hunger. We look forward to seeing your group again.”
