ASMS

The Alternative School for Math & Science

Innovative teaching. Student-centered learning.

Middle School Grades 6-8

ADMISSIONS

The Alternative School for Math & Science is a coeducational, independent day school. We are located in Corning, New York, but welcome students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades from throughout the Southern Tier of New York and northern Pennsylvania. Our comprehensive program is designed to engage and support students who are interested in exploring learning. Students applying to ASMS should be excited to become part of a community that values respect, nurtures academic inquiry, and encourages the quest for individual excellence.

ASMS is proud to celebrate a culturally, socioeconomically, and intellectually diverse community. We welcome applications from students with varied skills and interests, and of all racial, ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

The Admission Process

Step One: Getting to Know Each Other

The first step in the admission process is for you to get to know us and for us to get to know you. To do this we encourage you to:

1. Read the information on our website.

2. Talk to past and present members of the ASMS community.

3. Complete the online Information Request Form.

4. Schedule an admission tour.

5. Schedule a “shadow day” when your child can come and experience a day in the life of an ASMS student.

Step Two: Complete an Admission Application

In order to advance your child’s application, you must provide us with the following:

1. A completed and signed Admission Application Form

2. A signed Transcript and Test Release Form

3. A completed Weeks Local 1000 Scholarship Form (for applicants whose parent(s) or grandparent(s) are active or retired members of Local 1000).

4. $50 application fee

If you have any questions while filling out the forms, please contact The Alternative School of Math & Science at (607) 962-0011.

Please note: ASMS gives first consideration to complete application packages received by January 1 for September admission. After January 1, ASMS accepts new students through a rolling admissions process, space permitting.

Step Three: Admission Decisions

Your admission file is complete when your child has completed a shadow day*, and we have received your application form, your child’s school transcripts and reports, and your application fee.  In early January, the admissions committee will review all applications received by the January 1 deadline.  Families of prospective students will be informed of admissions decisions by mail in early February.  After January 1, if spaces are still available, the admissions committee will review completed applications in the order in which they arrive.

*Note: Students transferring from international schools or schools out of state may have the tour and visit requirement waived.
